Cheap Decorating Ideas: How to Make Your Home Look Like a Million Dollars on a Shoestring Budget

When you're looking for cheap decorating ideas, what could be less expensive than using what you already have? These inexpensive decorating ideas will have your home looking like a million dollars on a shoestring budget. Budget decorating ideas come from many sources. Interior redesign, popularized by television programs, shows you how to use your existing furniture, art and accessories in new and creative ways to add spark to your home. Cheap doesn't necessarily mean low quality. It may mean spending less money by buying a few high quality home decor items rather than focusing on quantity.
Use furnishings in unusual ways:

-A long forgotten footlocker once used to haul clothing to and from summer camp can be put to good use as a coffee table. It adds a touch of the unexpected and creates an eclectic decorating scheme.

-Two-drawer file cabinets make great end tables in the living room. They're a comfortable height for holding a reading lamp, have ample storage and can be painted to match your color scheme.

-An old bureau or dresser becomes a chic storage chest when you refinish it in a coat of glossy black paint and update the hardware by spraying it with metallic paint that complements the metal finishes used in your decorating scheme. The chest works great in the living room, the bathroom, or any room where you need additional storage.
What's old can become new again:

-Time-worn dining room chairs can become a chic addition to a living room. Update the chairs by covering them with ready-made slipcovers or by wrapping the cushions with a length of remnant fabric that's stapled to the underside of the seat. Presto, you have side chairs for a mere fraction of the cost of new seating.

-A dining room or kitchen table can be placed behind a sofa and repurposed as a sofa table that holds lamps, plants and other decorative objects. When you're ready for a change, you can relocate the table to a hall and use it as a console table or as a desk in a home office. It will provide ample space for your laptop, paper work and supplies.

-Rather than having custom slipcovers fabricated for an entire sofa, have your seamstress make slipcovers for the seat cushions. Select a fabric that complements the main body of the sofa and create a mix and match look. It's a much less expensive option and gives the sofa a brand new look and feel.

-Leftover wallpaper mounted on poster board becomes inexpensive wall decor. Hang the art a single piece on the wall above a sofa or in multiples in a hall or above a dining room buffet.

-Simple accessories such as an odd plate left from an old set of dishware can add texture, dimension and color when hung on a wall. Add even more interest by hanging the plates in an arrangement that creates a geometric shape such as a rectangle or square.
Budget decorating ideas are all around you. You just have to use a bit of imagination and creativity. What's most important is that you're willing to experiment and have fun.
